a unique style of texture

My work explores texture and surface treatment. I began carving linocut print blocks and using them in my printmaking to create multiple copies of an idea. I’m drawn to replicating pattern on different surfaces. Like traveling the same road everyday but noticing something different each time.

I started pressing my print block designs into slabs of clay. For the first time I was able to make a surface on clay that was uniquely mine. The inspiration for my print blocks comes from my experiences, an old carved wooden door in Thailand, or the vibrant wallpaper in a Vietnamese restaurant on Capital Hill.

Once the texture is pressed into the clay, these slabs are then altered to create a form. I’m drawn to anthropomorphic forms, each with their own personality. I like to imagine my pieces coming to life in the middle of the night, waddling to the kitchen and sneaking spoonful’s of peanut butter only to turn back into clay in the morning.
